Here
is some information about the local communities in the Elgin
area:
Carpentersville:
Population 25,000. Dating to 1837 when Charles Carpenter settled on the banks
of the Fox River, the business expertise of his son, Julius Angelo Carpenter,
shaped the village's commercial character for years to come. Buying a dam on
the Fox, he controlled water power so vital to industry. He purchased a woolen
mill and flour mill and formed the Illinois Iron & Bolt Co. A subsidiary,
Star Manufacturing, became Dundee Township's largest employer
In the 50's
and 60's, a modest subdivsion called Meadowvale brought "suburbs" to the Fox
Valley. Today, Carpentersville benefits from the commercial growth of Spring
Hill Mall.
East Dundee: Population 2,721.
Incorporated in 1871, East Dundee exudes quaintness and charm, centered on Rte.
72 (Main Street). Steeped in history, the village is home to the nationally
prominent Haeger Potteries. The Milk Pail Restaurant and Entertainment Complex
on Route 25 was once the site of Max McGraw's (McGraw Edison Electric Co.)
private hunting and fishing club. Fox River Trail bikers continually cross Main
Street as they travel the thirty-six mile paved trail. Attractions include
Santa's Village, the Polar Dome and Racing Rapids Action Park.
Elgin: Population 85,068. James
Talcott Gifford left upstate New York in 1835 to found a town, which he named
after his favorite hymn. Chartered in 1854, it grew to a bustling city with the
help of the Elgin National Watch Co., the nation's largest producer of fine
jeweled movements. Today, as Elgin moves westward, new housing construction and
tremendous economic development supports a population of 95,000. The Grand
Victoria Riverboat Casino joins with the corporate offices of First Card,
Panasonic Distribution Center and a future Motorola research complex as
evidence of Elgin's diverse growth. Easy access to the I-90 Tollway brings
visitors to Elgin's Fine Arts Festival, the Hemmens Cultural Center and the
Visual Performing Arts Center at Elgin Community College. Several hotels
welcome visitors to the area, including the newly completed 243 room Crowne
Plaza Hotel.
Gilberts: Population 987. In
1839, Albro Gilbert farmed land that today is in the center of Gilberts.
Arrival of what is now The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad came in 1852 to
what was then called Gilberts Station. David Haeger of Haeger Potteries Inc.
set up shop in 1882, becoming the largest brick and tile factory in Illinois.
Incorporated as Gilberts in 1890, today the village is defined as rural
suburbia, a mix of historic and new residential homes.
West Dundee: Population 4,743. In
1837, a drawing was held to determine who would name the town, and the winning
Scotsman chose "Dundee" after his hometown in Scotland. Its tree-lined streets
and renovated downtown offer specialty and antique shops, and commercial growth
continues around the Spring Hill Mall area. The Dundee Township Historical
Society Museum displays information about a former famous resident detective,
Allan Pinkerton.

First Time Buyers >Finding A Real Estate Agent
Finding an experienced, reliable real estate agent whom you like and trust is the first step in locating your new home. Here is an approach to finding the right agent.
Call or stop by a real estate office and ask to speak with the manager. Describe the type of home you are looking for. The manager can refer you to an agent who knows that market very well. You might also use weekend "open houses" as opportunities to look for a real estate agent, as well as a new home. It is really a matter of chemistry! If you meet someone who is knowledgeable and with whom you feel comfortable, call that person!
Once you establish a strong working relationship with a real estate agent, your agent can show you a number of homes for sale, even if they are listed with other companies. Often the agent can show you a property as soon as it is placed on the market. Many of the best homes never even make it to the weekend classified section of the newspaper!
